Woefully Inadequate

This book has a lot of good and bad rolled into it. I’ll hit some of the good before moving on to the bad. Though good in a number of respects, I think the bad far outweighs the good.
The book is largely geared toward ethics, as opposed to metaethics, and applications. The textbook, in particular, focuses on ethical theories, with the idea of applying them to real-world ethical issues. The application isn’t rigorous, often employing other ethical thought in the applications chapter (for example, John Rawls is brought into the chapter on economic justice). MacKinnon covers ethical relativism, even though she admits this is more of a metaethical position while numbering it among ethical theories, as well as utilitarianism, Kant’s moral theory egoism, contractarianism, natural law theory, virtue ethics, and care ethics. Pages 1-161 cover ethical theory, while pages 162-485 covers ethical issues; and there is a 15-page section on how to write an ethics paper. The text is well written, the layout is appealing, both rationally and aesthetically, and the discussion is very, very well organized. It is probably largely due to the nature of the presentation that this textbook has been so well received. For instance, each chapter, whether focusing on an ethical issue or an ethical theory, gives a preliminary discussion written by Mackinnon, followed by primary pieces of literature from the field of ethics. In the chapter on Kant’s moral theory, following MacKinnon’s discussion, which includes good examples like the Tuskegee that appeals to reason for examining and employing Kant’s theory, there is then an excerpt from Kant’s “Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Morals”; and the chapter on Environmental Ethics, after Mackinnon’s discussion, includes an excerpt from William F. Baxter’s “People or Penguins: The Case for Optimal Pollution.”
The text is undesirable for many reasons. First among these is that there is not much in the way of philosophy being done in the book. The clumsy treatment of the chapter on “ethical reasoning” is written as if by someone who (I hope, for the sake of the discipline of philosophy!) is not a philosopher. In fact, the treatment that she gives Kant shows that she may not even understand the whole of Kant’s ethical theory, never managing to mention the importance of Kant’s empirical anthropology to the theory (See “Kant” by Allen Wood, chapter 7). There may even be a second reason for not including the empirical anthropology, supposing MacKinnon does understand Kant’s theory: such an inclusion would be damaging to her general position, laid out early in the book, that science can play no role in deciding what is ethical —though she somehow finds it okay to substantiate the feminist perspective on ethics with psychology (see Mackinnon, chapter 9). I certainly don’t agree with Sam Harris, that science has all of the answers to ethics, but denial that it plays any role in deciding matters, in at least some cases, is horribly problematic. Elsewhere, MacKinnon’s personal agenda is far too obvious in the text, such as in the chapter on contractarianism, which has only two pages devoted to it, and which is rather haphazardly done. Her pet theories and he relativism shine through, throughout the text. She places much harder lines of contention against those theories she doesn’t agree with as much, and then presents lines of contention that are fairly weak against those theories she strongly favors (i.e., utilitarianism). For instance, she fails to note that some philosophers don’t even think utilitarianism satisfies the basic requirements of what an ethical theory must be in order to be an ethical theory (see lecture 4 and 5 of Peter Kreeft’s “Ethics: The History of Moral Thought) —that’s far more of a challenge to the theory than MacKinnon presents! On the note of history, and MacKinnon’s lack of diversity in philosophical perspective, she does not view history as something that can advance ethics. MacKinnon also rejects bases of thought that instantiate economic systems, explicitly saying that there is contradiction to be found in trying to use capitalist thinking in ethics. I disagree with this: Adam Smith and Karl Marx have much to teach us about ethics, as evinced by Brian Leiter’s blog, which reported that Marx’s manuscripts are among the most important ethics texts of the past 100 years (as voted on by 600 philosophers). There is quite a bit to say negative about the textbook, but I will end on the religious foundations as an aspect of reality that some look to for ethical grounding inspiration, etc. MacKinnon simply devotes a sentence or two to saying that divine command theory and religious views cannot seriously contribute to ethical understanding, concludes the first chapter with the “Euthyprho” of Plato, and never broaches the subject again. The short shrift is very unfortunate, because there is quite a bit of room for argument for either side; and it should be discussed at some length. For my class, I told my students that the approach we would take is one that focuses on internally consistent reasoning within ethics per se, and so we did not have to go where the book did not.
In the end, I think this textbook provides a good foundation to some thinking in ethics, and it certainly can suffice as an introductory ethics textbook. However, anyone considering purchasing this book should be very aware that the person writing it is more an activist who is a dilettante in philosophy (i.e., a philosophaster). I honestly don’t know what MacKinnon’s degree is in, but I suspect that she did her Ph.D. in one area, and then, like many scholars, moved into another area of study, in this case, ethics.
